PromptPay, VietQR, QR Ph: how Asia's national QR rails work

A field guide to the national QR networks reshaping how money moves in Asia, and what their design choices mean for anyone sending money in.

The pattern: one country, one standard

Asia's QR revolution did not come from a single company. It came from central banks and national switches mandating one interoperable standard per country. One QR at the merchant, every bank and wallet on the other side. That mandate is why acceptance reaches from department stores to fruit stalls.

Thailand: PromptPay

Operated under the Bank of Thailand's national e-payment program, PromptPay addresses accounts by phone number or national ID and settles instantly across every Thai bank. Thai QR built on top of it made scan-to-pay the national default at checkout.

Vietnam: VietQR

VietQR is the QR standard of NAPAS, Vietnam's national switch. The QR payload encodes the receiving bank and account, and transfers clear in real time across more than 40 banks and the major wallets. Vietnam's cash-heavy economy adopted it at remarkable speed.

Philippines: QR Ph

Mandated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, QR Ph runs on the InstaPay real-time rails and unifies addressing across banks and e-money issuers in a country where wallets, not banks, are many people's primary account.

The next wave

PayNow (Singapore), DuitNow (Malaysia), and QRIS (Indonesia) follow the same national-standard pattern, and ASEAN's cross-border QR linkage program is starting to connect them to each other directly. KHQR runs on Cambodia's Bakong backbone; UPI, the world's largest real-time network, anchors the region's western edge.

What this means for payouts

For anyone sending money into these markets, the QR rails are the destination that actually reaches people. The engineering problem is that every rail speaks its own protocol, and the commercial problem is that each has its own membership rules. That aggregation layer is what Zennopay exists to be: one API in front of every rail on the ledger.
